Sportsmen – America’s First Environmentalists

Today when one thinks of environmentalists, hunters and anglers don’t usually come to mind. In fact, sportsmen and women are probably among the last things that many would associate with the environmental movement. And yet, American sportsmen have a long history of taking measures to conserve and protect the nature we enjoy. From the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, sportsmen and women were leaders of the American conservation and environmental movements, understanding how important it is to take an active role in preserving our environment in a practical and sensible way. They understood there must be a balance between the protection of our natural resources and the utilization of those resources for the benefit of our society.
